What Brushes Do I Use?
This is a question I get asked often, and it’s not one I can blindly answer. With each comment, I have to go back to the video to see what brush I happen to be holding. Yes, some brands make really good brushes, but sometimes the brush I want to use is the one at the bottom of my bin, the one I’ve taped back together, or whatever one happens to be clean and within reach! It also depends on what I’m actually painting on, which varies from a wall to shoes, skateboards, surfboards, canvases, and more.
This is a non-sponsored post, and I probably own 2-3x this many brushes, but the rest are all duplicates of what’s already represented here in shape, size, and usefulness. That being said, keep scrolling to see all the brushes in my inventory!
Puts the paint on thicc and pulls smoooooth lines! Their medium brush set has become a favorite of mine for linework; I also have a bunch of their square 1” but they’re in my mural bin!
Angelus: I mostly use these for smaller details in murals, acrylic paintings, or for linework! I hold the brushes like a pencil and let the width of the brush determine the size of the line.
This is the brush I used for linework on my recent basketball player mural. I don’t know what brand it is, and it’s so old the handle has a curve!
Regular Ole House Brushes: These are consistent and dependable, and I mostly use them for edges, to fill large spaces, or during the prep/priming process.
Bates Choice: I mostly use the smaller sizes that come in a pack of three, great for adding clean details. The tip comes to a nice point but also holds a lot of paint. They’re pretty affordable and come in a lot of colors. I’ve used these brushes to paint bird feathers, and I just discovered that you can get the handles in a color other than yellow.
My tiniest brush vs. my largest brush, used for shoe details or painting on a house! This is the image that pops in my brain whenever someone asks what brush I’m using. I’m happy to answer every time, but before I see where the comment comes from, it could be anything!! I also do my best to include what brush I’m using in the caption for every post, so please check there first if you’re curious!
Even if the handle is chewed on by a dog, I’ll still use it because the bristles are nice and worn in.
Miscellaneous: These are brushes I’ve had forever! Some are a Michaels Zen brand, Master’s Touch, or from those packs of brushes from craft stores.
